Bangon Pilipinas leaders were joined by multi-sectoral groups in a mass action in front of Batasan Complex today to call for immediate action on the continuously growing reports affecting the integrity of the May 2010 elections.

It also called for the suspension of canvassing, if necessary, and pave the way instead for a manual counting amidst allegations of massive cheating in the May elections.

While the party clarified it was not negating that Senator Benigno Aquino III won the presidential race, it said that there is a need to uncover the truth of what really happened in the last elections.

“It is time to recognize that (Senator Aquino) is the presumptive President-elect and thus, we implore him to commit the office of the Presidency to help find the truth and get to the bottom of what really happened in the May 10, 2010 elections,” said lawyer Ted Pascua, Bangon Pilipinas secretary general.

Once the evidence warrants, he said, President-elect Aquino should “bring the responsible persons to task for trampling upon the people’s sacred democratic right to vote and choose through honest elections, their leaders.”

Aside from Bangon Pilipinas stalwarts, expected to join the rally are Sen. Jamby Madrigal, Nicanor Perlas, and JC Delos Reyes. Also expect to attend are former MMDA chairman and vice presidential candidate Bayani Fernando, former DENR Secretary Lito Atienza, Homobono Adaza, and peoples’ movements such as Concerned Citizens Movement, Kontra Daya, PMP Sulong Pilipino, Agrarian Reform group, Bagumbayan Party, Bangon Pilipinas Party, and Philippine Computer Society.

“There are a lot of explaining to do as to how the automated electoral system ( AES ) was carried out.  For one, it did not comply with the requirements of law and the Supreme Court,” Pascua said in a statement.

He said that while the party accepted the victory of Aquino in the presidential race, Bangon believed that those behind the “wrongs and injustices” should be made to account for the violations incurred.

“We call on all righteousness believing Filipinos to help the cause of truth and justice, to come out and declare (as did Jun Lozada then did in the past) what wrongs and injustices occurred in the May 10, 2010 elections. The only way evil can triumph is for good men and women to do nothing. We cannot correct any wrong if we tolerate it,” Pascua said.

He said Bangon Pilipinas is enjoining nation-loving Filipinos to join hands in ferreting out the truth about the AES .

While the task may not be easy and would require united efforts, it is what the nation needs so that the system could be improved for the benefit of the next elections.

Likewise, Pascua said pushing for an investigation of the AES is aimed at encouraging Filipinos to be a nation that gives high value to honesty and integrity and which shall not drown truth and justice in the sea of expediency nor surrender or sell their sacred right to vote just because of difficulty in ferreting out the truth.

“If we cannot find what went wrong and hold people responsible for allowing the people’s right to suffrage to be trampled upon, then there is no more reason to call any election again in the future,” Pascua said.  (30)

In a concerted effort to pursue the truth surrounding the system and result of the first automated elections which is marred with allegations of irregularities and fraud, multi-sectoral groups will gather together in a RALLY FOR TRUTH today, 08 June 2010, 10:00AM, at the South Gate of Batasang Pambansa.

Expected to join the rally are Sen. Jamby Madrigal, Nicanor Perlas, and JC Delos Reyes. Other invitees include Bayani Fernando, Lito Atienza, Homobono Adaza, and peoples’ movements such as Concerned Citizens Movement, Kontra Daya, PMP Sulong Pilipino, Agrarian Reform group, Bagumbayan Party, Bangon Pilipinas Party, and Philippine Computer Society.

Issues to be covered include:
1. Petition for a National Manual Count to verify and confirm the election results;
2. Action to ratify the transgression of the implementation of the spirit and letter of the Election Automation Law;

b. BEI’s Digital Signature

3. Full investigation of the allegations of election fraud, which is sought to be participated in by Philippine Computer Society, Center for People Empowerment in Governance, and other non-partisan, civic, and professional organizations to determine the accuracy and reliability of the PCOS machines.

Bangon Pilipinas just went through its second foray into national politics. At first glance, everything seemed to have ended in disaster. Its standard bearer early on was hostaged to a measly two to three percent survey rating, and the results of the automated quick polls seemingly just confirmed it. The “religious” or spiritual approach to political participation was put on trial, and seemingly the verdict is that faith and politics don’t mix, and they will not work. Worst, the score they gave Bangon’s standard bearer is only half the votes he got the first time around. Appearing to have suffered a direct hit also is the prophetic movement that partly, if not largely, fueled the Bangon fight.

So, the question now is, quo vadis Bangon?

Let us put things in proper perspective:

First of all, even from a purely earthly point of view, casting aside all religious and spiritual moorings, anybody who proposes to reform, overturn, and change the utterly sick Philippine socio-economic-political system will have to begin on a tremendous disadvantage. You enter into a fight disavowing the use of half of the weapons of the fight because precisely you want to change the system. So vote-buying is out, putting barangay leaders on payroll is out, “special ops” to add or subtract votes is out, demolition job on the opponent is out. These are about the most powerful and devastating weapons in the political battlefield, and the reformer lets go of them. For all practical intents and purposes, from the purely pragmatic point of view, the reformer is already a poorly armed warrior even before he gets into the ring.

Political reformers are like revolutionary movements. The oppressed always starts as a severely disadvantaged underdog against the oppressor. All battles for liberation against oppression and injustice do not start fair. But that is why it is called a cause, not just a fight. A cause is greater than a fight. A cause is the resolve of the disadvantaged to undo or overturn a superior oppressive or unjust force which is enjoying all the advantages.

Tested against this standard, Bangon succeeded in more ways than people are wont to grant or concede: It has put up a credible and veritable nationwide army of volunteers. It has ran a campaign largely on volunteerism, with the overwhelming majority of its foot soldiers willing to fight on the power of conviction and not on the persuasion of cash. Most gratifying of all, the army held despite severe lack of logistics, despite intermittent personality clashes and differences, because of a commitment to a higher principle (“the cause”) that enabled them to transcend and set aside these problems and differences.

In short, Bangon has decisively proven that an army of reform-minded citizens can be assembled and that it will engage head-on armies of superior force. It may not yet be an army of overwhelming numbers, but at least it is a critical mass, a core group of dedicated and committed soldiers, spread far and wide enough to be able to cover the entire archipelago. Victory is of course the ultimate objective. But, as rightly put, it is the ultimate objective. Electoral victory, however, is not the first item in the agenda of the reformer. It is whether the reformer can assemble people crazy enough to fight at a tremendous disadvantage, fully aware of the inherent handicaps and limitations, yet being willing to wage battle to the end. And Bangon has amply demonstrated that, yes, there are people in this country who are willing to wage such a severely handicapped war. Besides, history always shows that it is the courage and conviction of a few that change the quality of life of the many. Bangon has shown that it is willing to be the decisive few and not the clueless many.

It was not a perfect, flawless fight. Bangon struggled defining and conveying its message to the electorate. What it understood so well inside (complying with God’s standards for blessing a nation), all of a sudden became a communication difficulty to the electorate. Was it a fight of good versus evil, or which was the better good? Was it righteousness versus unrighteousness, and everybody else unrighteous? Was it about who was the best qualified, or was it even class struggle, i.e., masses versus landed or vested interest? Was it about the Philippines’ “glorious prophetic destiny”? Can we preach in a political campaign? The task became doubly complicated with huge media institutions clearly favoring the already popular candidate.

There were also challenges on how to integrate the backbone of the army, which is JIL, and the other members of the body of Christ. Stalled or slowed down in its effort to address theological questions (separation of church and state, should a pastor abandon the “highest calling”, etc.), pacify wounded and offended feelings from the 2004 election experience, Bangon courted the sectors rather late, with an NFS-led charge into the farmer and labor sector undertaken mid-way already and late into the campaign. And of course, there was the perennial funding problem.

But the army held on. The organization did not split or dismember. The volunteers willingly took and bore offense, charging everything to the account of the greater cause and the higher principle.

So to the charge that Bangon lost miserably, and must therefore consider folding up, I say so did Erap, Villar, Teodoro, with all their huge advantages, and incumbent senators of the republic, as well as a Nobel Prize winner and a party inspired by and standing on the principles and precepts of the largely predominant Roman Catholic Church. That Bangon fielded coordinators in all layers of the political geography, established a command center, deployed watchers, toured the archipelago and held decent rallies and mitings de avance, are veritable proof that Bangon has successfully and convincingly demonstrated that an army of principle-based, faith-ran, reform-minded, all-volunteer political force is very possible and doable in the deteriorated and morally moribund Philippine political setting.

We need only to look at history that we may not judge Bangon too harshly. The struggle to free the Negro slave and imbue him with full civil and political rights took more than a hundred years in the United States. The movement to abolish the slave trade took a quarter of a century in England. King David became king of Judah 15 years after he was anointed by Samuel, and an additional 7 years before he became king of all Israel, or a total of 22 years. Bangon has just been in the fight in the last 6 years (2004 to 2010). Put another way, Bangon is a just a six-year old kid-warrior, battling century old giants and institutions, big on cash and popularity and media support, grizzly veterans of political warfare not encumbered by moral or divine rules of engagement, not counting Uncle Sam.

Yes, the kid-warrior has not won the numbers (yet), but after a full-blown conflagration, it is left standing, with its wounds, scars and all, but standing still, the flag torn but still flying, and the sword still in hand, with a real score several times more than what was given to it. The kid must not be scorned.

Looking at this audacious kid, five things come to my mind and spirit:

1st is Respect. Respect this kid, this disadvantaged soldier who has a lot to learn but who believed the cause and fought to the end. Respect that he fueled his own vehicle, walked unpaid to deliver the flyers that quickly ran out of supply. Respect him who continued to tour the homes and the barangay even though there were no posters and streamers of his party in sight. Respect him for how he stood in the blistering heat and the pouring rain, waiting for hours on end for the slate that is coming hours behind schedule. Respect him that he made his own t-shirt, bought his own ballers, performed “ola” and did “speak and run” for a party or candidate that never got beyond 3% in the survey rating. Respect him for never once suggesting to his commander-in-chief to raise the white flag of surrender. Respect him for having disagreements and differences with his comrades but putting them aside because he is loyal to the greater cause. Respect him for how he wanted to speak to the nation but was not given enough space. Respect him for reaching the finish line.

Second is gratitude and appreciation. Gratitude that in a country carried away by cash, popularity, and sentimentalism, the kid became the remnant that has not lost its sight on righteousness, the singularly most crucial thing that this country desperately needs to truly arise. The kid, this remnant, is the only one that did not forget that without God, no amount of brilliance can turn this country around. Gratitude that this remnant has organized itself into a nationwide army. Gratitude for the more than decent tour-de-force all over the country by the slate and the rallies held. Gratitude that some local Bangon candidates made it. Small victories but victories nonetheless. Do not despise the day of small beginnings, as the prophet says. Appreciation for the audacity of hope and faith. And gratitude for the faithfulness, courage and integrity of the leader that has remained intact through out the dark nights.

Third is kindness in judgment. Kindness in judgment is not being soft on ourselves. Kindness in judgment is being careful that we do not throw out the baby with the bath water. Kindness in judgment is being sure that we preserve and nurture what we have even as we learn from what we have not achieved. Brutality in judgment may be a form of self-flagellation and may be a tool of the Devil to quench the spirit, the spirit of the reformation. Kindness in judgment preserves the army that it may learn from its mistakes and fight another day. The kid does not need a sermon or a lecture. He deserves an arm around his shoulder and a long walk in the woods with those who love him and care for him. I strongly propose kindness in judgment for this kid.

But we need objectivity in evaluation of the kid’s strengths and weaknesses. The kid has to continue to grow up. The art and the science of campaigning and political engagement is not thrown out of the window in the exercise of faith and in the atmosphere of love. Faith sanctifies the art and science of politics, and in mastering the art and science of politics, the kid-warrior becomes a man.

Most of all, we need courage, fortitude and resolve to go on. To borrow from Lincoln’s words and ideas, to take care of him who has borne the battle, with malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to build on our gains, learn from our shortcomings, and to continue the cause of righteousness in the land. This must be the disposition of the kid.

So, let the kid-warrior retreat to the woods. Let him rest, lick his wounds, walk by the brooks, reflect on what has been, talk to his God, repair his weapons, practice in the forest. In due season, let him come out a better man.

In the meantime, let everyone learn to love, respect, and nurture the kid-warrior. And let not everyone forget his name, which is his calling and anointing, Bangon. Bangon Pilipinas. What he is called, that is what he will become.

The right of suffrage, which includes the right to vote for our representatives in government, is the centerpiece of our nation’s democracy. Any deprivation, curtailment or limitation of such fundamental right upon any citizen through an election system that fails in meeting the standards for the secrecy and sanctity of the ballot makes the exercise of such right a sham. Furthermore the lack of transparency in the registration and appreciation of the ballot, where the public is unable to effectively monitor, swiftly examine and verify the process for any fraud, irregularity and manipulative conduct, including unintentional errors in the receiving and accurate counting of votes makes any democracy untenable.

In carrying out its mandate under the Constitution the Congress enacted Republic Act 9369, authorizing the Commission on Election to use an automated election system, which among other things, required minimum functional capabilities including the:  (1) accuracy in recording and reading of votes as well as in the tabulation, canvassing, electronic transmission and storage of results; (2) provision for voter verified paper audit trail; (3) system auditability, which provides supporting documentation for verifying the correctness of reported election results and (4) which provides a system of verification that the machine has registered the voter’s choice. The minimum systems capabilities of the AES were intended to secure and protect the sanctity and indestructibility of the ballot. It requires that the voter must be able to verify, without detailed knowledge of computers, whether or not his or her vote as cast is truthfully recorded. Blind and ignorant reliance upon the capability and functionality of an automated system is not enough. The ability to personally inspect and confirm the proper and accurate registratiration of the vote is imperative. Indeed, simply being informed by an electronic display that the voter’s ballot has been registered, without benefit of verification for truthfulness is grossly inadequate.

We have received alarming reports and complaints from a growing number of voters who attest that their choice of candidates in the May 2010 election have not been properly registered or counted by the PCOS machines.  They claim under oath that in the precincts where they voted, the election results show a much lesser number of votes obtained by Bangon Pilipinas candidates than the actual number of votes cast in their favor. They also claim that the PCOS machines in their clustered precincts do not provide them with any receipt, record, documentation or any other visible means of verifying the registration of their choice of candidates, thereby clearly violating the requirements of the law and the Constitution. These complaints which could ultimately involve millions of voters are matters of great and urgent national importance because they impact on the right of suffrage of the citizenry and constitute a grave threat to Philippine democracy.

While the AES has been popularly applauded for the efficient speed at which it has determined the election results and virtually eliminated some forms of cheating arising from the undue delay in the counting of votes, efficiency or expediency in determining electoral results can never compromise or substitute for the sanctity of the ballot which must at all times be protected.

For this reason, Bangon Pilipinas is thoroughly verifying these reports and complaints and has also asked its team of lawyers to study the possible adequate remedies to uphold and safeguard the sacred rights of the electorate and to submit their recommendations as quickly as possible.

We would like to assure everyone that the actions or remedies that Bangon Pilipinas will take, if at all necessary, will be for the Filipino people and not for the purpose of questioning the victory, prevent or contest the proclamation of any candidate as the winner in this historic electoral contest. In fact it will not be about protecting or upholding the rights or claims of any candidate. Its singular purpose is to preserve and defend our democracy by ensuring the secrecy and sanctity of the ballot of the citizenry as guaranteed under our Constitution. In this regard, we invite all voters who may have similar reports or complaints to come forward for the protection of their sacred right. ###

Bangon Pilipinas Party said it will investigate complaints from members that votes of their candidates were not counted in the last elections.

The Party said that while the automated electoral system has been applauded for the speed at which it generated the result of the May 10 election, “efficiency or expediency in determining electoral results can never compromise or substitute for the sanctity of the ballot which must at all times be protected.”

“We have received alarming complaints from a growing number of voters who attest that their choice of candidates in the May 2010 election have not been properly registered or counted by the PCOS machines. They claim under oath that in the precincts where they voted, the election results show a much lesser number of votes obtained by Bangon Pilipinas candidates than the actual number of votes cast in their favor,” BPP vice presidential candidate Perfecto Yasay said.

The complaints, he said, “could ultimately involve millions of voters. It is a matter of great and urgent national importance not only because it impacts on the right of suffrage of the citizenry, but if confirmed to be true, constitutes a grave threat to Philippine democracy.”

Bangon Pilipinas standard bearer Bro. Eddie Villanueva said he received reports that in many precincts where his supporters voted, he garnered zero votes. He said the party would verify the reports. “We will seek justice for this. Our lawyers will look into this matter,” he said.

Yasay also stated that the party’s team of lawyers is studying possible remedies “to uphold and safeguard the sacred rights of the electorate and to submit their recommendations as quickly as possible.”

He stressed that any action to be taken by Bangon Pilipinas on the reports ”will be for the Filipino people and not for the purpose of questioning the victory, prevent or contest the proclamation of any candidate as the winner in this historic electoral contest.”

“In fact it will not be about protecting or upholding the rights or claims of any candidate. Its singular purpose is to preserve and defend our democracy by ensuring the secrecy and sanctity of the ballot as guaranteed under our Constitution,” Yasay added.

Sa lahat ng nagtiwala at sumuporta sa Bangon Pilipinas,

Ito na siguro ang pinakamahirap na sulat na ginawa ko. Mahirap kasing isalin sa salita at pagkasyahin sa isang papel lang ang nag-uumapaw na pasasalamat sa puso ko.

Natapos na ang eleksyon at nagbigay na ng kanilang mandato ang sambayanang Pilipino. Hindi pumabor sa atin ang mandato ng eleksyon. Pero hindi ibig sabihin na nasayang ang prinsipyong pinanindigan natin sa labang ito.

Sa loob ng tatlong buwang campaign period, naramdaman ko ang pagsama ninyo.

Hindi biro ang pinagdaanan nating laban. Mabigat man ang sakripisyo ko, naging magaan dahil sa inyo. Hindi ko na maiisa-isa lahat ng kontribusyon ninyo para sa pagsusulong ng tunay na pagbabago… para sa matuwid na pamahalaan. Hindi ko man maisa-isa, salamat! Kayo ang “unsung heroes” ng Bangon Pilipinas.

Sa panahong ito, dalangin ko na lahat tayo ay magkaroon ng kapayapaan na ang lahat ng ginawa natin ay hindi para sa ating sarili kundi para sa Diyos at Bayan.

Ang ginawa natin para sa Diyos, hindi mawawalan ng kabuluhan. “Therefore my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the LORD, because you know that your labor in the LORD is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Ang ginawa natin para sa bayan, nakaukit na sa kasaysayan. Wala nang makakanakaw nito sa atin.

Gaya ninyo, nasasaktan din ako. Pero maiibsan ang sakit na ito kung sama-sama pa rin tayong magpapalakasan sa bawat isa at hindi matitinag sa patuloy na pagdalangin sa Diyos na magkaroon ng matuwid na pamahalaan sa ating minamahal na bansa!

A paraphrased prayer from Daniel 3: 16-18: God, we do not need to defend ourselves in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it and You will rescue us. But even if You do not, we want the Filipinos to know that we remain steadfast in our service to God and country.

We have given joy to the heart of God as we supported His cause for the Philippines. Now, let the joy of the LORD be our strength!

Bro. Eddie Villanueva congratulates the Filipino people for taking back power in their hands through their resolute will to elect a new President.

In a statement, Villanueva said, “Salamat sa lahat ng Pilipinong nanindigan para bumoto at magluklok ng kanilang lider sa pwesto.  Yan ang kapangyarihan ng eleksyon!”

Villanueva, a fighter of democratic rights, said he submits to the will of the Filipino people.

“With the new President elected, Bangon Pilipinas will find ways to help in nation-building, especially in areas where we could pursue social reforms that would benefit the majority of the Filipino people,” Villanueva said.

Villanueva added that while he did not get the Presidency, he will continue advocating for righteous governance and will pursue the ideals and principles that guide Bangon Pilipinas. He also assured the new President that he will be praying for his success and blessing.

He also said that he will ask the next President and the legislators to look into election laws so that it could be perfected to further strengthen our electoral system as a democratic process. “Bangon Pilipinas  national headquarters received numerous reports of our supporters voting for us but the election returns showing zero.  The problem is that the PCOS machines do not issue receipts showing the voter that the ones he voted for are the ones that were counted.  That is why many of our supporters cannot believe that we scored less than a million votes only.  In Luneta alone we had 1.2 million people.  We believe that this is an imperfection in the system that should be addressed by corrective legislation.”

There were also complaints about the transparency of how the votes were counted by the precinct count optical scan machines. “These are valid complaints that needed to be addressed and which we hope will no longer be issues in future automated elections,” Villanueva said.

Villanueva also thanked his supporters who were steadfast from the beginning. “Bawat isang boto nyo ay boto para sa tunay na pagbabago. Sa panahon na kakaunti ang naniwala sa atin, hindi kayo natinag. Salamat sa inyong tiwala!”, he said.

During the campaign period, farmers and fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, overseas Filipino workers and Muslim communities joined Villanueva and helped him explain his platform on new politics and a new economic model that would bridge the gap between the rich and poor.

Villanueva called on other candidates to also find common grounds where they could all work together for a fresh beginning for the Philippines.

“Pagtulung-tulungan natin ang pagbangon ng Pilipinas!”, Villanueva said. ###

Hindi tayo binigo ng ating mga kababayan!

Sa kabila ng mga report ng mahabang pila, sa kabila ng hindi pangkaraniwang init ng araw, sa kabila ng nakakairitang hindi gumaganang PCOS machines, nanindigan ang sambayanang Pilipino para kunin muli sa kanilang kamay ang kapangyarihang magluklok ng kanilang mga lider. Hindi tayo sumuko sa panandaliang hirap para sa pangmatagalang pakinabang ng bansa.

Salamat sa ating mga kababayan!

Ito ang tanging araw kung kailan ang sambayanang Pilipino naman ang tunay na bida… ang may akda sa patuloy na kwento ng isang bagong simula… ng pagbangon ng ating bansa. Naniniwala akong nanindigan tayong lahat para bigyang-buhay ang pagbabagong ating inaasam. Sumigaw tayo noon ng tunay na pagbabago. Umaksyon tayo ngayon para magkaroon ito ng katuparan.

Pero hindi sa pagboto natatapos ang ating laban. Mas mahirap ang kasunod nito. Patuloy tayong maging mapagbantay o vigilant para mapanatiling sagrado ang ating mga boto.

Sa sama-sama nating pagbabantay, maiingatan natin ang mandatong nakapaloob sa ating mga balota. Sa pag-iingat natin nito, mga kababayan, babangon na ang Pilipinas!

Bro. Eddie Villanueva, presidential candidate of Bangon Pilipinas, was perfectly at peace on the eve of election day.

“We have presented our Platform of Government and provided the Filipino people a true alternative this election. I trust in the collective wisdom of the Filipino people to vote according to their conscience,” Villanueva said.

Villanueva spent the entire day in his office in Bulacan where he was on top of monitoring developments in the field. Villanueva also had a brief meeting with leaders of both Bangon Pilipinas and the Eddie Villanueva for President Movement.

“We are ready across the country,” he said referring to the volunteer watchers who were assigned to guard Bangon Pilipinas votes on election day.

Villanueva walked across the room while entertaining phone calls from supporters. Local politicians called him from time to time to assure him of their support.

Just before dinner, Villanueva also spent time reading comments of support and encouragement posted on his Facebook fan page. As he was relaxed sitting in front of his laptop, he also posted birthday greetings for fans who said that May 10, election day, also coincided with their birthdays.

One comment he posted, “Hi, Karla! Si Bro. Eddie ito. Salamat sa paninindigan para sa Diyos at Bayan! A blessed, victorious birthday to you!”

Lastly, he capped the night kneeling in prayer. His main prayer was for a credible election.

Earlier, he had said that “If elections would again be marred by massive cheating, then the country would suffer worse in the coming years. It is a must that we have an honest and credible elections this time so that the incoming President would have a clear mandate and support for nation-building.”

“Panatag ang loob ko na gusto at pipiliin ng ating mga kababayan ang anim na taon na walang korapsyon,” Villanueva said. ###
